Trauma can affect how you think, feel, relate to others, and experience your body. You may feel constantly on edge, emotionally numb, stuck in the past, or overwhelmed by memories you didn’t choose to revisit. At Integrative Psychology, we provide specialized, evidence-based trauma therapy for adults, including treatment for PTSD and trauma related to medical experiences, birth, accidents, adverse childhood events, and chronic stress. Our fully licensed psychologists and counselors are available for adults in Arlington, Massachusetts, and via secure telehealth across Massachusetts.

Trauma therapy may be helpful if you:
• Experience intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
• Feel constantly on guard, tense, or easily startled
• Avoid reminders of past events or feel emotionally shut down
• Struggle with guilt, shame, or distorted beliefs about yourself or the world
• Notice trauma showing up physically (sleep problems, pain, GI symptoms)
• Have a history of medical trauma, birth trauma, or trauma from childhood
• Feel “stuck,” despite insight, coping skills, or previous therapy
• Want trauma treatment that is structured, evidence-based, and thoughtfully paced
Trauma does not have to involve a single catastrophic event. Many people seek trauma therapy for experiences that were overwhelming, frightening, or prolonged—especially when safety or control was compromised.

Evidence-Based Trauma Therapies We Offer
EMDR Therapy
EMDR is a structured, research-supported therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they are no longer experienced as overwhelming or “stuck.” EMDR does not require detailed verbal recounting of trauma and is often experienced as efficient and deeply transformative.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
CPT is a structured, cognitive-behavioral trauma therapy that helps identify and modify unhelpful beliefs related to trauma—such as self-blame, guilt, or beliefs about safety, trust, and control. CPT is especially effective for PTSD and trauma-related depression.
Written Exposure Therapy (WET)
Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a brief, evidence-based therapy for PTSD that reduces trauma-related stress by having people write about their experiences in a structured way in sessions that decreases distress over time. It is highly effective and often more tolerable than traditional exposure therapies.
Your licensed therapist will help determine which approach—or combination of approaches—is most appropriate for you.
How Trauma Therapy Works
1. Initial Consultation and Assessment
We begin by understanding your history, current symptoms, supports, and goals. Safety and readiness are always prioritized.
2. Preparation and Stabilization
Before trauma processing begins, we ensure you have tools for grounding, emotional regulation, and nervous system stability.
3. Trauma Processing Phase
Using EMDR, CPT, WET, Seeking Safety, or other integrative methods, therapy focuses on reducing the emotional intensity of traumatic memories and changing trauma-related patterns.
4. Integration and Recovery
As symptoms improve, therapy shifts toward integration, rebuilding trust in yourself and others, and strengthening resilience moving forward.
Trauma therapy is collaborative and paced intentionally. You remain in control throughout the process.
