Chronic Pain & Health-Related Conditions

Health psychology and behavioral medicine care for chronic pain and complex health conditions in Arlington, MA and across Massachusetts

Living with chronic pain or ongoing health symptoms can be exhausting—physically, emotionally, and mentally. You may feel frustrated by treatments that focus on one part of the problem while ignoring how stress, the nervous system, and lived experience affect symptoms. At Integrative Psychology, we provide specialized treatment for the effects of chronic pain and health-related conditions using integrative and innovative health psychology and behavioral medicine approaches. Our licensed psychologists and counselors are available for adults in Arlington, Massachusetts, and via secure telehealth across Massachusetts.

Comprehensive, Innovative Care for Chronic Pain and Health-Related Conditions

Paragraph

You may benefit from our chronic pain and chronic health-related treatment if:

• You live with ongoing pain that has not fully responded to medical treatment
 • Your symptoms may fluctuate with stress, mood, or fatigue
 • You experience pain alongside anxiety, sleep problems, or trauma
 • You often struggle to have enough “spoons” to get through the day
 • Pain or chronic health symptoms are affecting your work, relationships, or identity
 • You want evidence-based care that addresses both the body and nervous system
 • You are motivated to better understand and influence how pain operates in the body and mind

Many of our clients have already worked with medical providers and are seeking a more integrated, whole-person approach that reflects the most current neuroscience.

Who This Care Is For

Paragraph

At Integrative Psychology, chronic pain and health conditions are understood through the lens of health psychology and behavioral medicine—fields that examine how biological, psychological, behavioral, and nervous system factors interact to influence symptoms and recovery.

We never treat pain as “imagined” or “purely psychological.” Instead, we focus on:

 • How the brain processes pain signals
 • How stress and trauma can affect the nervous system
 • How learning, conditioning, and attention may shape symptoms
 • How behavior, sleep, and emotional regulation can impact pain intensity

This integrated approach allows us to work alongside your medical care, not replace it.

Our Health Psychology & Behavioral Medicine Approach

Evidence-Based Therapies We Use

Treatment is individualized and may include one or more of the following approaches:

  • Biofeedback and Neurofeedback
Biofeedback (including neurofeedback) helps you learn to influence and have more control over physiological processes such as muscle tension, breathing, heart rate variability, brain waves, and stress response—factors that may amplify chronic pain or flares.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps people identify what is most important to them, based on their values and goals, and helps you find new ways of moving towards living in alignment with those meaningful things while still accepting the real limitations that chronic conditions may currently be causing in your life.
  • Clinical & Medical Hypnosis
Clinical hypnosis is a well-researched intervention for pain (acute and chronic), GI conditions, and health-related symptoms. Medical hypnosis can help reduce pain intensity, change pain perception, and improve coping and function.
  • Cognitive and Behavioral (CBT) Pain Neuroscience Interventions
We use evidence-based cognitive and behavioral strategies to address pain-related stress, worry, avoidance, limiting factors, and activity cycles that can unintentionally worsen symptoms. We use the latest neuroscience research to optimize the brain’s neuroplasticity and nervous system function as it relates to chronic pain and other chronic health conditions.
  • Empowered Relief® for Chronic Pain
We offer Empowered Relief®, an evidence-based pain management program developed at Stanford University. This brief, structured program teaches practical skills for reducing pain intensity, distress, and the impact of pain on daily life. Empowered Relief is effective for many chronic pain conditions and can be offered individually or in group formats.
  • Integrative Mind-Body Interventions
Depending on your needs, treatment may also include relaxation training, guided imagery, pacing strategies, and nervous system regulation techniques.

Health Conditions and Pain Concerns We Treat

How Treatment Works

1. Comprehensive Assessment
We begin with a detailed evaluation of symptoms, medical history, stressors, sleep, emotional health, and nervous system patterns.
2. Collaborative Treatment Planning
Together, we identify which behavioral medicine and health psychology interventions are most appropriate for your goals and symptoms. We are also happy to collaborate with your outside clinicians, only with your permission, so we can work as a team to best support you.
3. Active Treatment Phase
Sessions focus on skill development, nervous system regulation, managing the stress of chronic conditions, and reducing pain amplification patterns—while supporting meaningful function and quality of life.
4. Integration and Maintenance
As symptoms improve, therapy shifts toward long-term self-management strategies and resilience during future stressors.
Treatment is collaborative, structured, and respectful of your pace and medical context.
